Since most can recall the month of August has been declared ‘Women’s Month’, with the ninth day especially set aside to celebrate the achievements of women. On this day homage is paid to all women who took a stand for what they believed in – equality. On 21 August, Northlink College celebrated women and invited all the female staff for a groundbreaking afternoon. Over 150 women were in attendance and enjoyed a cup of coffee/ tea and a pink cupcake on arrival.

The aim of the event was to uplift and inspire woman in the workplace, to help and encourage each other to celebrate “being woman”. Guest speaker Lindy Hibbard, a radio presenter from Smile 90.4 FM delivered an inspirational and motivational speech that gave great insight to her life and journey to success. Lindy is very ambitious and passionate with the idea of becoming successful and replayed these words “Never give up on your dream”. Trish Van De Merwe, Deputy CEO for Innovation and Development (Northlink College) and host addressed the audience and highlighted the importance of the role that women play in society, work and at home. She also shared with them the “values of a women”.

The College Performing Arts department students showcased a teaser of their upcoming production, Sarafina, which will be performed at the Baxter theatre from 1-3 October 2015.

To top off the event all the ladies participated in a candle lighting ceremony that symbolised light, positivity, strength, unity and equality among women.

“You have tampered with a woman, you have struck a rock”. So echoes the song composed to mark this historic occasion. – Kelly Leng
