Western Cape TVET College to start peddling in a new direction
This year saw 40 bikes shipped to the Northlink TVET College Bellville Campus as part of the Bicycle Empowerment Networks (BEN) mission “to address poverty and mobility through the promotion of the bicycle in all its forms.”
The container with the 40 bicycles was donated by Stavanger offshore tekniske skole from Norway which is an international partner college of Northlink.
Says Trish van der Merwe, Deputy Principal: Innovation and Development: “Northlink is privileged to have been selected from so many needy organisations that are in our communities. We do believe that we will be able to take these bicycles and give them to students and even other members of the community that will put them to good use.”
BEN has trained two individuals in bicycle mechanics to run the container based workshop to maintain the bicycles.
“This also supports the College’s going green initiative where we encourage students and staff to become more sensitive to the impact they make on the environment. We believe that every little thing can make a big impact in the long-term,” add Trish.
Northlink TVET College will soon be distributing the bicycles within the College and various communities in need in the months to come.
